What is a well-child exam?

A well-child exam is a comprehensive health evaluation of your child’s growth and development. It gives the team at American Pediatrics an opportunity to find health issues early on (when they’re easier to treat) and ensure your child is meeting all of their developmental milestones.

These exams are one of the most important health exams, and the team always tailors them to your child’s age, health history, and individual needs.

What happens during a well-child exam?

During a well-child exam, the team reviews your child’s personal medical and family history, checks their height and weight, and asks about their diet and exercise habits. They also perform a vision and hearing screening, check blood pressure, and listen to your child’s lungs and heart. They may also palpate your child’s organs, evaluate their skin, and assess their reflexes (muscles and joints).

Additionally, the team asks specific questions regarding your child’s development based on their age and developmental milestones, such as walking, talking, and playing.

The team also reviews your child’s immunization history and asks about their social, emotional, and behavioral well-being.

After the exam, your child’s pediatrician spends time talking with you about their overall health and makes personalized recommendations to ensure your child continues on a healthy path.

When appropriate, the team may make personalized recommendations to specialists to ensure your child gets the additional care they need to manage specific health conditions. For example, they might need behavioral or talk therapy for mental health conditions like attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, or depression.
