What is after hours care?

After hours care includes the option of pediatric medical appointments with a specialist after the regular office hours of 9:00 am to 6:00 pm (Monday through Friday). The practice offers this option of extended hours (as needed) to ensure your child receives the care they need to stay healthy.

Whether your child has an acute illness or injury, your child’s provider can guide you on the appropriate steps to help them feel better sooner.

Why might my child need after hours care?

Your child may need after hours care because of:

  • Cough
  • Cold and flu
  • Strep throat
  • Eye concerns
  • Ear infection
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • Rashes
  • Long-lasting fevers
  • Sports injuries
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Mental health concerns

If your child has a severe injury or another life-threatening condition, you should call 911 or head to the nearest emergency room (ER) instead.

Is after hours care right for my child?

Your child’s specialist at American Pediatrics can help you determine if they require after hours care following an in-person or telehealth consultation. They ask about the reason for your visit to understand the type of care needed.

Your child may need same-day after hours care due to a specific medical condition, or they may need extended weekday hours because of their busy school or work schedules.

What can my child expect during after hours care?

Your child can expect the same caring providers and exceptional pediatric care at American Pediatrics when you decide to have after hours care. Through a telehealth visit, their provider performs a virtual exam, in which they evaluate your child’s symptoms. For example, if your child has a skin rash, they might ask to point your camera’s device to see the rash.

They also review your child’s medical history, medication regimen, and lifestyle habits. They might recommend further diagnostic testing for an acute injury or illness to pinpoint the cause of worrisome symptoms (depending on your child’s needs).

If your child needs a well-child exam, American Pediatrics also offers these services during extended weekday hours for your convenience.

Your child’s pediatrician tailors their treatment plan to maximize their health, wellness, and quality of life. To take advantage of after hours care, call American Pediatrics or book an appointment online today.
